Tengo del amor profundo y de su uso provechoso un concepto superficial y decorativo. Estoy sujeto a pasiones visuales. Guardo intacto el corazón entregado a más irreales destinos. No me acuerdo de haber amado sino el «cuadro» de alguien, lo puro exterior —en que el alma no entra más que para hacer ese exterior animado y vivo— y, así, diferente de los cuadros que hacen los pintores. Amo así: fijo, por bella, atrayente o, de otro modo cualquiera, amable, una figura de mujer o de hombre —donde no hay deseo no hay preferencia de sexo— y esa figura me obceca, me cautiva, se apodera de mí. Sin embargo, no quiero más que verla, ni [...] nada más [...] que la facultad de llegar a conocer y a hablar a la persona real que esa figura aparentemente manifiesta. Amo con la mirada, y no con la fantasía. Porque nada fantaseo de esa figura que me cautiva. No me imagino unido a ella de otra manera [...] No me interesa saber qué es, qué hace, qué piensa la criatura que me da, para que lo vea, su aspecto exterior. La inmensa serie de personas y de cosas que forma el mundo es para mí una galería interminable de cuadros, cuyo interior no me interesa. No me interesa porque el alma es monótona y siempre la misma en todo el mundo; diferentes apenas sus manifestaciones personales, y lo mejor de ella es lo que transborda hacia el sueño, hacia las maneras, hacia los gestos, y así entra en el cuadro que me cautiva [...] Así vivo, en visión pura, el exterior animado de las cosas y de los seres, indiferente, como un dios de otro mundo, al contenido: espíritu de ellos.
